What does it mean to pray?
To pray means to communicate with a higher power or spiritual being. One must believe and be convinced that there is a higher power or spiritual being.

How do we COMMUNICATE with this higher and spiritual being?
COMMUNICATE implies: a Message, a Sender, a Recipient.
Some synonyms of the word pray are: ask, beseech, recite, urge, implore, importune, invoke, petition, supplicate, cry for, request, crave, solicit, appeal,...
Basically when Jesus says: keep asking, seeking and knocking; meaning NEVER stop praying(Matthew 7:7).
In many occasions in the Bible, the Lord reproaches his people that they love to talk but they do not like to listen with their heart.
Matthew 15:10  -  John 9:27  -  Isaiah 55:2-3  -  Exodus 32:7-10

Prayer that comes from the heart is an expression of humility.
Prayer that comes from the heart is an expression of our feelings,  of our resentments,  of our life to a higher invisible being in which we believe,  has our Best interest at heart. Prayer brings to us that assurance, that inner peace, that inner light, that inner joy in all circumstances.
Prayer is the way to freely  express ourselves to a higher being in whom we ABSOLUTELY Trust with our life.
We should never forget God is Holy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, they shall see God. (JESUS - Matthew 5:8)
Our daily sins, intentional or not, are covered by the precious blood he shared through his son.
We are all accountable as individuals for our sins.
Prayer that comes from a yearning(craving) heart keeps us close to the father's heart.
NO ONE should never be forced to pray. But everyone must be encouraged to get to know Jesus, first.
I'm the way, I'm the truth, and I'm the life. (JESUS - John 14:6)
The God we serve is a God of Transformation and Multiplication.

PRAY IN ALL SEASONS. In good as in bad, pray; in rainy as in dry, pray; in abundance as in lack, pray.
Prayer is a lifetime,  a lifestyle.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

- Luke 18:1-8
