To pray simply means to communicate with a superior and invisible being.
Communication implies: a sender, a message and a recipient. God teaches us that, as the recipient of the message, he is sovereign, omniscient, omnipotent, holy and not influenceable.
As long as the spirit of the living God dwelt into human being, humanity had always pray to a superior being, consciously or unconsciously.
For us Christians, Bible teaches us how to pray. Jesus was a prayer warrior during his stay on earth. He always prayed early morning and late night.
The only time Bible tells us why to pray is motivated in Matthew 26:41 - Jesus saying to James, John and Peter "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation."
One thing is certain: a prayer led by pure motives, gives a clarity of mind, a profound peace and a mental strength.
For us Christians, prayer Must be scriptural based. Our responsibility is to pray. God responsibility is to watch over us.
There is no great prayer, nor small prayer but there are anointed prayers led by the Holy Spirit.
