TRANSFORMED MIND FOR TERRITORIAL TRANSFORMATION – Part XXIX

IT’S GOOD FRIDAY✝️ - WHAT HAPPENED IN HELL?

Matthew 12:40
‘For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be…’

1 John 5:4
‘Whatever is born of God overcomes the world.’

1. Jesus Descended into the Realm of the Dead

> “He descended into hell…” (Apostles’ Creed)

“For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be...” (Matthew 12:40)

“He also descended into the lower earthly regions…” (Ephesians 4:9)

2. Jesus Proclaimed Victory Over Powers of Darkness

> “Afterbeing made alive, He went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits…” (1 Peter 3:18–19)

“Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” (Colossians 2:15)

- Jesus wasn't preaching for repentance.
- He was declaring victory, exposing demonic forces, and showing that death had been defeated.
- Like a conquering King entering enemy territory, He paraded His authority.

3. He Took the Keys of Death and Hades

> “Iam He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.” (Revelation 1:18)

Jesus didn’t just survive death—He conquered it.
- He stripped Satan of authority over death.
- The keys symbolise legal dominion—Jesus took back what Adam and Eve gave to Satan.

4. He Liberated the Righteous Dead

> “WhenHe ascended on high, He led captivity captive…” (Ephesians 4:8)

“The tombs broke open...and many bodies of the saints...were raised to life.” (Matthew 27:52–53)

- Before Jesus' resurrection, even the righteous (like Abraham, Moses, David) were in a waiting place (often called Abraham's Bosom).
- Jesus led them out, into the presence of God.
- This act emptied Paradise’s waiting room and opened the gates of Heaven.

5. Hell Trembled

Although Scripture doesn’t describe it in full poetic drama, the early church often imagined this moment as Hell in panic:

- The gates of death crushed by the Lion of Judah.
- Satan realising he had triggered his own defeat.
- Demons silenced as the rightful King claimed His victory.
