THE DISCONNECT
The story of King Hezekiah in 2 Kings 20 highlights the importance of bringing your strong reasons before God's throne of grace to obtain mercy and find grace in times of need (Heb 4:16).
A brief summary of Hezekiah's life as King of Judah:
He became king at the age of 25.
Hezekiah’s Reforms when he became King over Judah
Restored true worship in Jerusalem after his father’s idolatry (2 Chr. 29).
Reopened the Temple, repaired it, and re-established the priesthood and Levites.
Destroyed the bronze serpent of Moses (which had become an idol).
Reinstated the Passover, inviting even remnants of the northern tribes.
➡️Hezekiah put God first at the start of his reign.
The powerful Assyrian Empire (under King Sennacherib) invaded Judah.
Jerusalem was surrounded, and the Assyrian commander (the Rabshakeh) mocked God.
Hezekiah did not rely only on military strength but sought the prophet Isaiah and prayed in the Temple.
God answered: An angel of the Lord struck down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night (2 Kings 19:35).
➡️Hezekiah was prayerful and depended on God.
Distinction: Considered one of the best kings of Judah, alongside David and Josiah.
Reading 2 Kings 20:1-6 - How King Hezekiah presented his strong reasons before God's throne of grace
Isaiah 41:21 “Present your case,” says the Lord. “Bring forth your strong reasons,” says the King of Jacob.
Proverbs 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.
Job 32:7-8 I said, ‘Age should speak, And multitude of years should teach wisdom.’ But there is a spirit in man, And the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding.
Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
When you pray in tongues you're aligning the situation to the will of God and not to your expectations. The end result is that God strengthens you to persevere in His will for your situation and not to change His will.
I John 5:14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
John 14:13-14 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
I Corinthians 14:14-15 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.
