TREASURES IN HEAVEN. AWAY FROM MOTH, RUST AND THIEVES.
Luke 8:14
" The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature."
Matthew 6:19-21
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Luke 12:16-21
"And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
“This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”"
Key lesson on treasures.
• Jesus is speaking to His disciples about trusting God rather than material security.
• The warning is not against possessions, but against placing our confidence and identity in them.
• Earthly wealth gives a false sense of safety.
MOTH
Meaning of “Moth”
• In Bible times, wealth was often stored in fine clothing and fabrics. (which in biblical times represented wealth and status.)
• Moths destroy garments quietly and slowly, often when no one is watching.
• The damage is slow, quiet, and often unnoticed.
• Spiritually, moth represents:
• Hidden decay
• Pride
• Dependence on appearances
• Wealth that fades without warning
Lesson: Some losses happen quietly when our hearts drift from God.
RUST.
Meaning of “Rust”
• The word translated rust means corrosion, decay, or consumption.
• The Greek word translated as rust actually means “eating away” or “corrosion.”
• It includes corrosion of metals and the spoilage of stored food (like grain being eaten by pests).
• Rust represents inevitable deterioration—everything material wears down with time.
• Rust symbolizes:
• Time
• Neglect
• The natural decay of earthly things.
Lesson: Everything material has an expiration date.
THIEVES.
Thieves as a Third Warning
• Thieves steal unexpectedly and forcefully.
• Represents:
• Economic collapse
• Fraud and deception
• Loss through people, systems, or circumstances
• Anything taken suddenly without warning.
• Thieves represent sudden, unexpected loss.
• Even what looks secure can be taken instantly.
• Earthly treasure is never fully safe.
Spiritual Meaning:
Even what looks secure can be removed overnight.
Proverbs 23:5
" Will you set your eyes on that which is not?
For riches certainly make themselves wings;
They fly away like an eagle toward heaven.
Lesson: Earthly wealth offers no guarantee of security.
Psalms 91:5-6
" You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
