GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT

Matthew 25:21 – “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!’”
Let’s unpack it piece by piece, then make it practical for your home, church, society, work.
1. The meaning + significance of “Well done, good and faithful servant”
Jesus tells this in the Parable of the Talents. A master leaves, gives servants money/“talents” based on their ability, then returns to check what they did with it.
3 words the Master praises:
1. “Well done” = Greek eu = beautiful, excellent, fitting.
It’s not “perfect” but “fitting”. You took what I gave you and you used it on purpose. The Master notices effort + direction, not just results.
2. “Good” = Greek agathos = inherently good, morally excellent, generous, useful.
Not just “nice”. Agathos means your character matches God’s character. You do what’s right even when no one claps. Goodness = integrity when unseen.
3. “Faithful” = Greek pistos = trustworthy, reliable, consistent.
You did the same thing on Day 2 as Day 200. Faithful people don’t need supervision. The Master could leave them again and sleep well.
4. “Servant” = Greek doulos = bond-servant, one who serves not for pay but because of relationship.
Identity before activity. You serve because you belong to Him, not to earn belonging.
Why “good” comes first before “faithful”?
God cares about who you are before what you do. Character → Consistency → Calling. He wants a “good” heart that can be trusted. A skillful but crooked servant is dangerous. A “good” person with small talent is safe in His hands.

2. How can I be “good” as a man in 4 spaces?
“Good” = agathos: morally excellent + useful to others. 1 example per space:
Home: Be good = protect, provide presence, not just provision.
Church: Be good = build people up, not just buildings.
Society: Be good = be a man of honor, pay debts, tell truth.
Work: Be good = produce excellence without cutting corners.

3. Expand the 3: GOOD, FAITHFUL, SERVANT with 3 examples each
A. GOOD - Morally excellent, useful, generous
What it looks like: You choose right over easy. Your presence makes things better.
3 examples of people who lived “Good”:
1. Joseph in Genesis 39: Potiphar’s wife offered him sin + promotion. He said “How can I do this great evil and sin against God?” He lost his job but kept his goodness. Goodness costs, but God promotes it later.
2. Ruth: A widow, foreigner, no obligation to Naomi. “Where you go I will go.” She worked hard in fields to feed both of them. Goodness = choosing loyalty when it’s inconvenient.
3. Dr. Paul Brand + Mother Teresa: Both treated “untouchables” and lepers when doctors ran away. They saw messy, painful people and said “You’re worth my hands.” That’s agathos - making yourself useful to the least.
How to practice “Good” this week:
Home: Do 1 hidden chore no one asked for. Wash dishes without being told.
Church: Notice the person sitting alone. Be good by including them.
Society: Return extra change if cashier overpays you.
Work: Send an email praising a teammate to your boss when they’re not in room.
B. FAITHFUL - Trustworthy, consistent, reliable
What it looks like: Small things + long time. You do what you said you’d do.
3 examples of people who lived “Faithful”:
1. Daniel in Babylon: “He prayed 3x a day as was his custom” even when law changed. Faithful = rhythm > emotion. Governments changed, Daniel didn’t.
2. Anna in Luke 2: 84 years old, widow, “never left the temple but worshiped night and day”. 60+ years of showing up. No headlines, but she was first to see baby Jesus.
3. George Müller: Ran orphanages for 60 years in 1800s England. Never asked for money, prayed for daily bread. 10,000+ orphans fed. Faithful in prayer when pantry was empty.
How to practice “Faithful” this week:
Home: If you said “I’ll be home at 6pm”, be home at 6pm. Faithfulness starts with time.
Church: Take 1 small role and do it for 6 months without needing thanks. Unlock doors, stack chairs.
Society: Vote, pay taxes, keep promises to neighbors.
Work: Meet every deadline for 30 days straight. Be the person manager doesn’t worry about.
C. SERVANT - Doulos heart, serves because of love
What it looks like: You don’t ask “What’s my job description?” You ask “What needs doing?”
3 examples of people who lived “Servant”:
1. Jesus in John 13: The Master became the washer of feet. God with towel around waist. Servant leadership = authority used to lift others, not control them.
2. Nehemiah: Governor of Jerusalem, but he says “I did not eat the food allotted to the governor because the demands were heavy on the people.” He used his position to carry burden, not add to it.
3. John Wesley: Rode 250,000 miles on horseback, preached 40,000 sermons, started schools + clinics. His motto: “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, for all the people you can, as long as ever you can.”
How to practice “Servant” this week:
Home: Ask wife/kids: “What’s 1 thing I can take off your plate today?” Then do it without sighing.
Church: After service, stay 15 mins to pick up trash or stack chairs. Serve where no one sees.
Society: Let someone with 2 items go ahead of you in queue.
Work: Onboard the new staff member. Explain things they’re too shy to ask.

The “Why” behind “Well done Good”
God says “good” because He’s restoring the image of God in us. Genesis 1:31 → “God saw all He made and it was very good.” Sin broke it. Salvation makes us “good” again through Christ. So when He calls you “good”, He’s saying “You’re becoming who I designed you to be.”
Closing prayer you can pray:
“Master, take my talents. Make my heart good like Yours, faithful like Daniel, servant like Jesus. I don’t want just results. I want to hear ‘Well done’ from You. Amen.”
