Our heart must be guarded with all jealousy. The building of character starts from the heart. In psychology it is believed that you see with the heart before the eyes. This truth is so transparent and clear.
The book of 1st Samuel is centred around the matters of the heart. As soon as Israel asked for a king, God went on a mission of spiritual heart surgeries.
1 Samuel 10:9 So it was, when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, that God gave him another heart; and all those signs came to pass that day.
1 Samuel 10:26 And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and valiant men went with him, whose hearts God had touched.
1 Samuel 10:27 But some rebels said, “How can this man save us?” So they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.
We just have to look into our hearts daily, for out of it flows the issues of life.
Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of life.
As we walk with God, emphasis must be on building character, epitomising a life of integrity. It is easy to get the anointing, but without character, one may just be standing on shifting sand.
Saul was anointed King, the first thing God did was to deal with his heart.
King Saul failed to develop the spiritual heart surgery that God did. His focus was more on the throne, which led to insecurities and that feeling of inadequacy.
At the time he was supposed to invest time building character, he was running around chasing David.
NEVER MAJOR IN GOING ON A JOURNEY OF FUTILITY.
Dealing with our hearts is a daily thing. It is a fixed fight, like the Americans will say.
When Deborah was going to go to battle, men had to search their hearts and came out with resolutions.
Judges 5:15 And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah;
As Issachar, so was Barak
Sent into the valley under his command;
Among the divisions of Reuben
There were great resolves of heart.
Judges 5:16 Why did you sit among the sheepfolds,
To hear the pipings for the flocks?
The divisions of Reuben have great searchings of heart.
God went a step further by turning around the hearts of men that joined affinity with Saul. He couldn't consolidate.
Our hearts must be searched daily, so that we can be men of character. This must translate to every area of our lives.

Lord help me to guard my heart with all jealousy.
Lord please do a daily heart checking in as I walk with you.
Lord please remove every hardness of heart from me. Please constantly remind me of the state of my heart.
Lord help us to stand against rebellion and disobedience. May we raise a generation of young men whose heart God will touch.
