After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return home to his family. And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.

 

 

The heart of Jonathan. Jonathan was the son of a king . Yet his heart was inclined to God. He could have looked to David as a threat to his throne as well, just like his father Saul did.

He however chose to follow his heart and react to David with kindness and love. He followed his heart. He was not pompous or trusting on his inheritance. He trusted the Lord and followed his direction.

 

1 Samuel 18:12

Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with David but had departed from Saul.

 

Saul was afraid of David because he was afraid of loosing his earthly power as King.

 

What are we secretly doing against God so that we may maintain are social status?

Can we give up very earthly inheritance and think of actions only where God is benefitted?                                            

 

Let us Pray:

God help us to seek you first in whatever we plan. Help us have the heart of Jonathan to depend on you and not our earthly genealogy . Help us follow the plans you have for us. Help us fit into the puzzle of life so that your work through me is completed in right time.

 

2. No matter how big the problem it cannot be bigger Than God.

 

1 Samuel 17:45-47

 

David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”

 

 

Saul and his army were terrified of Goliath, but David was not. This is because Saul and his army depended on themselves while David laid his trust on God. David could not bear that someone could defy God. In all of this his main purpose was to glorify God although it did make him popular.

What do we fear? With what intention do we go daily into our everyday life? Whose battle are we fighting?

 

Let us pray:

God may fear be the last thing on our minds. May we go into our daily battle with the evil one with faith, knowing full well that we will be victorious. Help us realise that there is no problem bigger than you and that you are above everything. There is nothing too big for you to handle.

 

3. Thick skin soft heart

 

1 Samuel 23:4-5

 

Once again David inquired of the LORD, and the LORD answered him, “Go down to Keilah, for I am going to give the Philistines into your hand. ” So David and his men went to Keilah, fought the Philistines and carried off their livestock. He inflicted heavy losses on the Philistines and saved the people of Keilah.

 

David always inquired of the Lord before doing anything. He was always Inquisitive of God’s plans in his day to day activity. When he got a response he would go into the matter heart and soul.

David’s heart was always to help the other and not self gain in this point of time. HE wanted to help his fellow country men from the hands of the Philistines even though he was being targeted. Knowing full well that an operation like this could blow his cover and Saul would be able to find him.

 

Saul on the other hand did not have the heart of inquiring. He went forth only to destroy for his own gain. Again, a heart of selfish gain.

 

How is our heart today? What are we trying to achieve when we do your daily activities.? Are we executing God’s plan or our plan?

 

 

1 Samuel 23:10-12

David said, “LORD, God of Israel, your servant has heard definitely that Saul plans to come to Keilah and destroy the town on account of me. Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me to him? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? LORD, God of Israel, tell your servant.”

And the LORD said, “He will.”

Again David asked, “Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me and my men to Saul?”

And the LORD said, “They will.”

 

 

David had a soft heart. Even though he risked his life to help the citizens of Keilah , they on the other hand were willing to surrender him to Saul.

In spite of this David did not hold a grudge with them or have any vengeance.

David left so that Saul would not come to Keilah and the citizens of Keilah would not bear the guilt of betrayal.

How are our hearts when we get offended?

David resisted vengeance. Can we thicken our skins when it comes to differences in the family, workplace with our spouse and colleagues so that God is made bigger.
