Topic: DISCOVERING YOUR INFLUENCE: A Leadership Perspective on Matthew 5:13-16
Content:
Matthew 5:13-16 gives us this: "You're the salt of the earth; but if salt becomes bland, what can make it salty again? It's good for nothing but to be tossed out and trampled underfoot.
14 You're the world's light. A city perched on a hill can't be obscured.
15 And when people light a lamp, they don't hide it under a bucket. They put it on a stand, and it lights up the room for everyone.
16 Let your light shine in front of everyone, so they can see your good deeds and give glory to your Father in heaven.
In
Matthew 5:13-16, Jesus delivers a powerful message about identity and purpose, telling us, "You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world."
This passage is not just a statement of fact; it's a call to action and a revelation of potential. It's about understanding your inherent value and the influence you carry, no matter where you are in life. God sees us not just for who we are, but for who we can become. He speaks to our potential, our destiny.
This echoes
Isaiah 46:10 - “He announces the end right from the start, revealing things not yet done, declaring, 'My plan will prevail, and I'll do everything I set out to do.'”
Three keystone elements of your identity
A. **Your Identity as Seen by God
From God's viewpoint, our identity is clear:
- We are the salt of the earth.
- We are the light of the world.
- We are like a city on a hill, meant to be seen, not hidden.
After presenting a new way of thinking, Jesus firmly establishes the identity of His followers. This is crucial because a strong sense of identity reinforces our thoughts, which in turn drives our actions and behaviour moving forward.
How do we respond to this knowledge? Consider Gideon's story:
- it's about embracing faith in God's nature and character
- believing His declarations about us
- affirming those truths, and
- aligning our behaviour with our divine identity.
B. Your Identity as Perceived by Others
How people see you influences how they relate to you. Without divine revelation, you might accept others' views about you at face value. But remember the exchange between Jesus and His disciples in
Matthew 16:13-17. When Peter acknowledges Jesus as the Messiah, it's highlighted that such recognition comes not from human insight but divine revelation.
This teaches us an important leadership principle: true identity and purpose are discovered through divine insight, not popular opinion. As leaders, whether in family, ministry, business, or any area of life, our understanding of Christ and our identity shapes our impact.
C. Your Identity from Your Own Perspective
It's easy to overlook or forget who God says we are. Challenges may lead us to doubt our identity. But remember, your identity doesn't fluctuate with feelings or circumstances.
Even on the darkest days, a lion remains a lion undeterred by the challenges of the moment.
God's words to us speak to every aspect of our being. This includes the concept of "Epigenesis" - the idea that our environment can influence us, but doesn't define us. Our identity in Christ is what truly defines us.
Characteristics of Salt as Leadership Qualities:
1. Preservation: Just as salt preserves, we are called to preserve integrity and goodness in our spheres of influence.
2. Flavour: We enhance the environments we're part of, bringing out the best in others.
3. Purity: Our lives set a standard of moral clarity and integrity.
4. Value: Like salt in ancient times, we bring invaluable contributions through our faith and actions.
5. Impact: Even a small amount of salt can change the flavour of an entire dish. Similarly, our influence can have a wide-reaching impact.
Remember, leadership is not just about position; it's about influence. As salt and light, our presence should make a difference. Let's embrace our identity and fulfill our God-given potential to influence the world for the better.
Prayer Points:
Prayer Point: Lord, grant me the revelation of my true identity in You. Let my understanding of who I am in Your eyes shape my life and influence.
Prayer Point: I affirm God's declarations over my life, immersing myself in the power of His Word. May my value and influence be evident in my family, workplace, ministry, and community.
