INTIMACY WITH GOD Part VI -  Finding joy in His Presence

The relationship between intimacy with God and joy is deeply connected in the Christian faith.

Intimacy with God Leads to Joy

 1. Presence of God: When we cultivate intimacy with God, we experience His presence in our lives. This presence brings joy, as described in Psalm 16:11: "You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."

 2. Fruit of the Spirit: Intimacy with God leads to the fruit of the Spirit, which includes joy (Galatians 5:22-23 ESV But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. )

As we walk closely with God, His Spirit produces joy in our hearts.

3. Trust and Confidence:
When we experience intimacy with God, we develop trust and confidence in Him. This trust brings joy, as we know that God is in control and working everything out for our good (Romans 8:28 NKJV And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.)

 Joy Deepens Intimacy with God

 1. Gratitude and Praise: When we experience joy, we are more likely to express gratitude and praise to God. This expression of worship deepens our intimacy with Him, as we acknowledge His goodness and love.

Psalm 95:1-7: Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the Lord is the great God, the great King. above all gods...Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.

 2. Faith and Trust : Joy can also increase our faith and trust in God. When we experience joy, we are more likely to believe that God is good and that He has our best interests at heart. This increased faith and trust deepen our intimacy with God.

Psalm 13:5-6 NLT
But I trust in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me. [6] I will sing to the LORD because he is good to me.

 3. Desire for God's Presence : Joy can create a desire for more of God's presence in our lives. When we experience joy, we may seek to deepen our intimacy with God, desiring to know Him more and experience more of His joy.

Psalm 84:1-2 NLT
How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of Heaven's Armies. [2] I long, yes, I faint with longing to enter the courts of the LORD. With my whole being, body and soul, I will shout joyfully to the living God.

Finding Joy in the Midst of Adversity

There's a unique connection between affliction and joy. In 2 Corinthians, Paul mentioned that in their extreme trials, there's one thing they won't stop
talking about: their persistent joy! They were "sorrowful, yet always rejoicing (6:10). Paul says, "In all our affiction, am overflowing with joy (7:4).

In a believer, trials have a way of revealing strength that comes from the joy of the Lord.( Nehemiah 8:10 NLT
And Nehemiah continued, "Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don't be dejected and sad, for the joy of the LORD is your strength!")

In a world filled with uncertainty and challenges, it's easy to lose sight of our joy. But Habakkuk 3:17-19 reminds us that our joy is not dependent on our circumstances, but on our relationship with God.

Habakkuk 3:17-19 NLT
Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, [18] yet I will rejoice in the LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! [19] The Sovereign LORD is my strength! He makes me as surefooted as a deer, able to tread upon the heights.

Habakkuk, a prophet in the Old Testament, found himself in a difficult situation. The fig trees had no blossoms, the vines had no grapes, and the fields were empty and barren. But despite these challenges, Habakkuk declared, "Yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!"

Habakkuk's joy was not based on his circumstances but on his trust in God. He knew that God was his strength, his rock, and his salvation. He knew that God was sovereign over all things, and that He would carry him through even the toughest times.

When we face our own challenges and difficulties, we can learn from Habakkuk's example. We can choose to rejoice in the Lord, even when things seem bleak. We can find joy in the midst of adversity by:

 1. Trusting in God's sovereignty: Knowing that God is in control of all things, and that He has a plan to prosper us, not to harm us (Jeremiah 29:11).
 2. Focusing on God's character: Remembering that God is good, loving, and faithful, even when our circumstances are not (Psalm 100:5).
 3. Cultivating a spirit of gratitude: Giving thanks to God for the blessings we do have, no matter how small they may seem (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
 4. Seeking God's strength: Asking God to be our strength and our rock, and trusting in His power to carry us through (Psalm 28:7).

The world and its trials may crack our jars of clay, but that's how the light gets out. In all our trials, we have the light and we have the joy, because He's where the joy is!

As we seek intimacy with God  and rejoice in the Him,  we can experience a joy that is not dependent on our circumstances but on our relationship with Him. We can be surefooted and steadfast, even in the midst of adversity, knowing that God is our strength and our salvation.
