Topic: THE SUPREMACY OF THE WORD Part VIII - THE THORNY HEART : THE SECRET OF ABORTIVE FRUITFULNESS
Content:
Matthew 13:7, 22 - “And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them… Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.”
Mark 4:7, 18-19 - “And some seed fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no crop... Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.”
Luke 8:7, 14 - “And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it… Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity.”
Reflections: The Conditions That Frustrate the Word
The parable of the sower highlights various heart conditions that affect the productivity of God’s Word. Here, the thorny heart reveals the secret of abortive fruitfulness:
1. The Thorny Heart vs. The Stony Heart: Unlike the stony heart, which had no depth, the thorny heart allows the Word to take root and grow. However, its growth is sabotaged by competing forces – the “thorns” of worldly cares and desires.
2. The Triumph of Thorns: The thorns grow faster and stronger than the seed, overshadowing and choking it. Rather than the Word thriving, the thorns dominate, suffocating its potential to bear fruit.
3. The Silent Danger of Riches: While persecution overtly harms the seed, the deceitfulness of prosperity operates covertly, often more destructively. Stones spoil the root, but thorns spoil the fruit.
Identifying the Choking Thorns
1. Cares of This World: Earthly anxieties and concerns consume the energy and focus needed for spiritual growth. These cares:
- Diminish the soul’s vigour for divine pursuits.
- Distract and divert attention from spiritual duties.
- Persistently undermine spiritual progress.
2. The Deceitfulness of Riches: Riches, in themselves, are not the issue; it is their deceitfulness:
- They entice misplaced trust and inflated expectations.
- They promise security and satisfaction, which they cannot truly deliver.
- They subtly ensnare the heart, choking its devotion to God.
