2 Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—
3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion.
2. Motivation for today’s sermon – Growth in all aspects of our lives the 5 P’s in Daniels life.
2 Peter 1: 8
Confirming One’s Calling and Election
3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
- Genesis 1: 28 “God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it”.
- From the Book of Daniel:(The book of Daniel is in the Old Testament and consists of 12 chapters yet with very important lessons and revelations).
3. Characteristics of Daniel
Daniel’s attributes were featured at the time of several kings. Starting with King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon who went to Jerusalem and besieged it in the third year of the reign of King Jehoiakim.
1. Daniel was intelligent, inquisitive and quick learner
Daniel 1: 1 – 4: Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility – 4 young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians
2. Daniel was not moved by the things of this world, kept his body whole didn’t drink alcohol
Daniel 1:5: The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king’s table.
Daniel 1:8: But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself in this way.
3. Had good negotiation skills, understood matters of nutrition, was he a vegetarian ?
Daniel 1: 11 – 16
11 Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12 ‘Please test your servants for ten days: give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.’ 14 So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.
15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. 16 So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.
4. Apart from being intelligent he was given knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning
Daniel 1: 17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.
5. Gift of dream interpretation
Daniel 1: 17 And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.
Chapter’s 2, 3 and 4. Daniel interprets dream of the kings.
Daniel had favour from all the kings that kept overthrowing each other.
Daniel 6: 3
3 Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the chief ministers and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.
6. Daniel’s conduct was of high integrity.
Daniel 6: 4 - 5
4 At this, the chief ministers and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. 5 Finally these men said, ‘We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.’
7. Daniel feared God
8. Daniel was a prayerful man
9. Daniel had favour from God.
Daniel 6: 16 – 22
16 so the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, ‘May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!’
17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.
19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. 20 When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, ‘Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?’
21 Daniel answered, ‘May the king live for ever! 22 My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.’
23 The King was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.
10. Daniel not only seeked and dwelled in the LORD he also beheld his word and always inquired from the LORD.
11. Daniel understood matters of God.
12. Daniel used to read Gods word.
Daniel 9: 1 - 3
In the first year of Darius son of Xerxes[a] (a Mede by descent), who was made ruler over the Babylonian[b] kingdom – 2 in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. 3 So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.
